Science Why it's so hard to treat pain in infants. The Amazon is home to about three million species of plants and animals, and one million indigenous people. The latest data marked a major increase from the 7, sq km announced by Inpe in - the year before Mr Bolsonaro took office.
The new figures are preliminary, with the official statistics set to be released early next year. Brazil had set a goal of slowing the pace of deforestation to 3, sq km annually by In addition to encouraging development in the rainforest, President Bolsonaro has also cut funding to federal agencies that have the power to fine and arrest farmers and loggers breaking environmental law.
Mr Bolsonaro has previously clashed with Inpe over its deforestation data. Last year, he accused the agency of smearing Brazil's reputation. In a statement, Brazilian non-governmental organisation Climate Observatory said the figures "reflect the result of a successful initiative to annihilate the capacity of the Brazilian State and the inspection bodies to take care of our forests and fight crime in the Amazon". But some officials said the fact that the rate of increase was lower than that recorded last year was a sign of progress.
The scale of destruction in the Amazon rainforest is hard to comprehend. Last year I experienced the silent aftermath of deforestation where huge trees had been bulldozed and would later be burned.
Many scientists are sceptical of the move. The government would do better, Artaxo says, to reinstate operation of the Amazon Fund. Its main funders, Norway and Germany, promptly froze their new payments and accused Brazil of breaking the deal. Nobre, C. USA , — PubMed Article Google Scholar. Marengo, J. Article Google Scholar. An investigation by Trase has uncovered how up to 5, sq km of forest is being felled in the Amazon and other areas annually to be converted into pasture used for cattle farming, with livestock from deforested areas found to be supplying abattoirs producing beef for global markets. There is no suggestion Lagoa do Triunfo beef is exported. AgroSB state that they purchased the land in , after the deforestation had already happened. The latest data shows that deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has been on the rise since Between August and July , about 7, sq km was destroyed.
In the most comprehensive study of its kind ever produced, Trase used customs, agricultural, sanitary inspection, and deforestation data to map Brazilian cattle exports from the international markets which consume them back to the more than municipalities where the cattle were raised. Because of the high volume of Brazilian beef shipped to China and Hong Kong, these markets are associated with the highest amount of deforestation in total — between 17, and 26, hectares per year — according to the analysis.
And that will increase if the EU and member states approve a new trade deal with Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to gradually let 99, tonnes of low-tariff South American beef into Europe every year.
Erasmus zu Ermgassen, lead researcher at Trase, said that while some slaughterhouses monitor their direct suppliers, none monitor their indirect suppliers.
