The idea of making newly married Laura Collins mayor of her hometown was a brilliant story which did something special that soaps struggle to pull off. As a former member of the Charles Street community, an upstanding Port Charles citizen in need of a new challenge, whose ex-husband was also briefly mayor of Port Charles, Laura could have filled the role of mayor perfectly.
Now that opportunity has been thrown by the wayside. Francis began playing Laura Webber in at the age of Their onscreen wedding had over 30 million viewers. If you carefully scrutinize the history of men and women on television, there is a clear double standard between the treatment women in contract roles receive, and those on soaps are hardly immune.
That Francis should receive the same treatment she did three decades ago is unsettling, to say the least. Further, GH has a history of poor treatment or firings of veterans.

Come on; they bring back Faison maybe for a while and send Laura Genie Francis off to be with her grandson shortly after she plans to run for mayor and gets married. I love Maura West as an actress, but her story-line is getting a little out there.

Come on now Lew! He destroyed Luke and Laura, he decimated the Quartermaines even further than they had been, he sidelined most of the vets to feature his creations. His GH was an unrecognizable mess!! Under Frank, he seemingly had carte Blanche to do whatever it wanted, and it left GH a broken hollow shell of a show that took 2 years to get back on track!
The guy is creative and knows how to spin an interesting tale. DAYS is benefiting from that. Even the actors seem to be enjoying the stories they are telling. Genie Francis is a good actress and as she has done in the past, will find work elsewhere. I am not normally a defender of Ron, but Luke and Laura were over a long time before he was head writer. I believe there is no better example of the systemic sexism in daytime tv than the way Genie has been treated her entire career. She has spent many years with other soaps. And- if one were to add her years with GH in comparison to her total years with other soaps that GH would come in last. Her heart is surely heavy as is mine. I feel her pain and empathize with her hurt. His exit story was lame. They would just screw up any attempt at a proper exit story for Laura too. Disgraceful move by GH. GH has made some bad decisions in the past, but this has to be the worst. One of the best was putting Genie Francis on contract in While her story never really ignited until now with her marriage to Kevin and running for mayor, this really put Laura in a position for great future story!
