Would appreciate any advice. Posted 31 July - PM Hi Im under the understanding that lighting should be simulated for 12hrs of the day not 3hr intervals.
Someone will clarify this but i think im right. El:7 Posted 02 August - AM Val, these torts are extremely large for 1 year olds. If their shells are indeed smooth i am wondering if they are really the age you think they are. Both the UV and heat lamp need to be on hours a day with no such intervals.
Posted 02 August - AM I do the lamp for 3 hours at a time because of reading somewhere that this is a precaution in case they flip over. As for size, again, I mention the graph and we did collect them last year when they were so tiny! I wish I could upload some photos. Posted 02 August - PM Hi Valery your torts are almost certainly a lot older than you think, especially if their length is the right proportion to their weight.
Sound more like three years olds to me but others know better. If you can get them outside as much as possible during the decent weather they will benefit a lot. It doesn't have to be sunny just a reasonably warm day. Dandellions are a very good food for Hermanns but a bit of variety is also good. Try the occasional clover meal, plantain leaf, mallow leaves and flowers and a heap of others are all good. Posted 02 August - PM Got the variety food and the lamp is on indoors for 12 hours.
I've had them out today and after about 3 hours - asleep in a corner! The torts were the size of a 50p piece when we got them. We were told they were a couple of months old. Can I send you some pics? Posted 02 August - PM yu can post pics on here they just have to be below a certain size wots probably happened is they have just been a bit piggy.
Posted 02 August - PM their shells are lovely and smooth and not highly domed and they do eat a lot. I have tried to post pics to the site but nothing happens. There was instructions once, but I can't find them.

Hope this helps. El; Ps. These tortoises need to be provided with a diet high in fibre and calcium, but low in protein and carbohydrates.
Remember to wash food items thoroughly to remove residues such as fertilisers or pesticides and lightly sprinkle the food with a calcium carbonate supplement such as calcidust every meal.
Also on alternate days, the food must be lightly dusted with a vitamin D3 supplement such as Nutrobal. It is also beneficial to offer cuttlefish bone which not only provides a calcium source but also helps keep the beak trimmed. A large shallow bowl of clean fresh water must always be available and it will need to be large enough for your tortoise to bath in but not so deep as to pose a risk of drowning. The water level should be just deep enough to submerge the plastron bottom half of the shell.
In addition to the water bowl, a tortoise will require a bath at least twice a week in tepid water as well as flush out any wastes such as faecal and uric matter.
Even though it is believed that tortoises can live outdoors and are capable of surviving the various weather conditions, the limited period of warm weather and sunshine in the UK is not really enough for the tortoise to maintain correct husbandry. The size of the tortoise table will vary depending on the size of the tortoise; Tortoises under 5 years approx: 90 cm x 45 cm x A small animal wire can be used throughout the warmer months to allow your tortoise to benefit from natural unfiltered sunlight.
Is that normal? Maybe it doesnt like sudden temperature changes this summer? I have to adult water sliders and they are so much active then my tortoise. Thanks for help! Aha, so it is ok then. It seems healty but I was afraid because of so much sleep.
I think it will be lively when I construct big table with all nice stuff. Hi welcome to the forum. How old is the tortoise? If you put some pictures up we should be able to tell the sub species and possibly the sex. The North West Tortoise Group. Find More Posts by Henry-flash.
