In terms of construction, this is the equivalent of the English present perfect. The structure is the same as English, but the meaning is identical to the simple past. For example, the infinitive verb schreiben to write is conjugated as schrieb I wrote in the simple past, and hat geschrieben I wrote in the compound past. Note the vowel change in the middle of the word!
